Description: Cumin is a spice made from the seeds of the Cuminum cyminum plant. Many dishes use cumin, especially foods from its native regions of the Mediterranean and Southwest Asia.
Cumin lends its distinctive flavour to chili, tamales and various Indian curries. Its flavour has been described as earthy, nutty, spicy and warm.
Uses: Although cumin has a uniquely pungent flavour, it is remarkably versatile. In Mexico, cumin is an everyday spice added to tacos and enchiladas, burritos and stews; while in India, jeera (as cumin is known) is central to kormas, curries, masalas, and soups. Use sparingly and often. To bring out the flavour of cumin either fry gently in ghee or oil, or toast lightly.
